Dr Van Patten is Professor and Chair of Chemistry at Middle Tennessee State University specializing in the study of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). His recent focus has been the study of cation exchange as a means to access new types of QDs that are challenging or impossible to synthesize by more direct routes. In the past, Van Patten has also studied QD self-assembly in solution, resonance energy transfer between QDs, and ultrafast photophysics of QDs. After earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of South Carolina, Van Patten served as a postdoctoral associate at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, studying the light harvesting properties of polymer films impregnated with metalloporphyrins and related dyes. His work has produced over 40 publications and 2 patents. In 2008, he was awarded a Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The scientific activity deals with the design of innovative coatings and methodologies to modulate the wetting behavior of surfaces, providing ceramics, glasses, metals and alloys of super-hydrophobicity, amphiphobicity, switchable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and related performances.

In particular, the focus is on the design and fabrication of materials for friction, drag and noise reduction (reference industrial sectors: mechanic, maritime, naval), materials with anti-icing (aerospace, electric conduction systems), anti-soiling, and anti-reflective properties (PV and building industry), materials with improved thermal exchange ability (heat exchangers), anti-corrosion, anti-fouling materials, etc.

Bhanu P S Chauhan is a Professor and Chairperson of the Chemistry Department at William Paterson University. He rose through the ranks of Assistant and then Associate Professor at City University of New York at the College of Staten Island, (CSI) before moving to his present position. He served at CSI as a Co-director of Center for Engineered Polymeric Materials as well as a one of the Member of CUNY Institute for Macromolecular Assemblies. He has co-authored various world-wide patents and numerous peer reviewed publications and have delivered plenary, invited, and oral presentations at national and international meetings. He has also edited a book titled Hybrid Nanomaterials, published by Wiley. Currently, he serves as an Editorial Board and/or Editorial Advisory Board Member of seven peer reviewed journals including Applied Organometallic Chemistry and Silicon. He has also been an Advisory Board Member of American Chemical Society-New Jersey Polymer Topical Group.

Narayan S Hosmane was born in Gokarn, Southern India and is a BS and MS Graduate of Karnatak University, India. He obtained a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1974 from the University of Edinburgh. After Post-doctoral Research in UK and in the USA (UVa), he joined Virginia Tech and then moved to SMU in 1982, where he became Professor of Chemistry in 1989. In 1998, he moved to Northern Illinois University as a Distinguished Research and Board of Trustees Professor. His international awards include but are not limited to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Senior US Scientist Award twice; the BUSA Award for Distinguished Achievements in Boron Science; the Gauss Professorship of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, Visiting Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He has published over 320 papers in leading scientific journals and is an author of five books on boron science and cancer therapies.

With wide experience in working with multinational German Chemical & Pharma co. Daphne T Mapolelo has expertise in synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of ruthenium metal complexes. My current research interest lies in the synthesis, characterization and biological application of ruthenium polydentate pyridine and benzimidazole-based complexes. The characterization of these ruthenium complexes requires the use of a wide range of spectroscopic/magnetic techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), MÖssbauer, resonance Raman, natural and magnetically induced circular dichroism (CD and MCD). In addition, in vitro and in vivo studies are employed to test the metal complexes for anticancer, anti HIV and antimicrobial activities.
